Twelve months back, the environment was utterly distinct. Prior to the national election, thoughtful residents could recognize America's deep flaws – its unfairness and inequality – but they could still perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A land where legal governance held significance. A nation led by a dignified and ethical public servant, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, many of us barely recognize the nation we inhabit. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are rounded up and pushed into vans, sometimes denied due process. The left side of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition for an obscene ballroom. Donald Trump is harassing his opponents or alleged foes and demanding the justice department hand over a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, renamed the Department of War, has – in effect – rid itself of regular press examination while it uses what could amount to almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Colleges, legal practices, news companies are submitting under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The US, shortly prior to its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the limit toward dictatorship and fascism,” Garrett Graff, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it occurred in this country.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's challenging to understand – and painful to realize – how deeply lost our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

Nevertheless, it is known that the leader was properly voted in. Following his profoundly alarming previous administration and following the cautions that came with the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after the leader directly stated openly he would be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the present situation is, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration position us? And suppose that period becomes an prolonged era, because there is not anyone to restrain this leader from opting that a third term is required, maybe for defense purposes?

Admittedly, there is still hope. We will have midterm elections the coming year which might create a new balance of power, should Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are trying to apply certain responsibility, such as Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in 2028 could start us down the road toward restoration just as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see numerous residents demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, similar to recent in the past days in the No Kings rallies.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is stirring”, exactly as before following the Red Scare during the fifties or throughout the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he understands the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding currently. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, bipartisan pushback to a television host's removal and the almost universal refusal by journalists to sign the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive till specific greed grows too toxic, an specific act so contemptuous of societal benefit, certain violence so noisy, that it is forced except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.

At the same time, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its position in the world and its commitment to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind suggests that the second option is accurate; that everything could be finished. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, advises me that we need to strive, by any means we can.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that means urging journalists to adhere, more completely, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to defend electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or in several years? The truth is, we cannot predict. All we can do is try to persevere.
