Explosion Takes Three Police Officers During Eviction Action in Italy

Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people got wounded in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped following the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

He believed the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
