Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
